Social Development: NGO & Social Welfare Workers

NGO Managers

We need people with NGO background who have at least 3-5 years' experience in as many of the following areas: organisational development; staff management, leadership and training; change management; developing and implementing administrative strategies, policies, systems and procedures, monitoring and evaluation systems; writing grant proposals, elaborating reports, maintaining donor relations; communications, networking and partnership development. Some experience in budgets and financial aspects of running an NGO is also appreciated. If you have set up an NGO or are currently running one, your skills are valuable to us.

Organisational Development Adviser - Kenya
Working with the Teenage Mother & Girls' Association of Kenya (TEMAK), you'll identify the current strengths and weaknesses of the organisation. Social Work Managers

We’re looking for experienced Social Work Managers to help improve the lives of people living with HIV and AIDS or disabilities in developing countries in Africa and Asia. Working with community-based or non-governmental organisations, you’ll improve management structures, identify and evaluate social problems, train your colleagues and provide counselling. You could be working in countries such as Nigeria, Vietnam, Namibia or Malawi, etc.

For most placements you'll need to be a registered social worker with at least 3 years' recent post-qualification experience, preferably in areas such as capacity building and advocacy in the field of HIV&AIDS, gender, mental health or disability. Management, supervisory or training experience is required.

Volunteer coordinators / Volunteer program managers

VSO supports the development of local volunteering initiatives in the countries we work in. We believe that people who work together out of community responsibility and shared commitment can make a major contribution to development in their own countries.

Right now we’re urgently looking for experienced volunteer managers to develop effective strategies for volunteer programmes, set up new volunteer centres and initiatives, and support local volunteer managers in countries like China, Mongolia, South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia, etc.

You'll need a degree level qualification and at least 2 years’ experience in managing volunteers or volunteer programmes. Patience, flexibility and strong communication and networking skills are also essential as you’re likely to work in a cross-cultural team with different stakeholders.

Youth / Community Workers

We're currently looking for experienced youth / community workers and volunteer managers to support community and volunteer development programmes in Africa and Asia. Working with community-based and non-governmental grass roots organisations, you’ll enable local people to become a driving force in their own development. You could work in countries like Uganda, PNG, Sri Lanka, India, Sierra Leone, Tajikistan, Namibia, Indonesia or Nigeria.

You'll need a relevant qualification plus at least 3 years' recent post-qualification community/youth development experience. Community mobilisation, participatory approaches and training experience are essential.
Experience in community based rehabilitation (CBR), disability and working with minority groups, vulnerable children is very useful. Management/supervisory experience is desirable. Most roles will focus around HIV and AIDS, disability and/or gender equality, so experience in any of these areas would be useful.

Advocacy & Campaigning specialists

Developing communities need effective advocacy strategies to change attitudes to HIV & AIDS, education, gender and disability. We are looking for advocacy, policy and campaigning professionals to work with organisations in countries such as Ghana, Uganda, Indonesia, Cambodia, India and others.

You'll need a degree level qualification and at least 3 years’ experience in advocacy, policy research or campaigning. Depending on the type of placement, you’ll also need experience in policy analysis, advocacy strategies, research tools and methodologies, awareness raising and media campaigns.

Fundraising professionals

We urgently need people with fundraising experience and skills for placements in Nigeria, Zambia, Namibia, Tanzania, Kenya Ghana, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya or Cameroon .

You’ll help community-based organisations to be more effective and efficient by mobilising resources that will ensure increased service delivery. You’ll need a degree in any subject and at least 2 years’ relevant professional experience. Knowledge of developing fundraising strategies, writing proposals, donor identification donor management are essential. Your ability to train and capacity build in these areas is also vital.

We are looking for people with a relevant degree and at least 2 years' experience in developing monitoring and evaluation systems for programs, project planning, information management, data analysis and reporting. You could be volunteering in countries like India, Bangladesh, Pakistan or Zambia.

Gender Specialists

We urgently need diversity and gender specialists to help us challenge inequalities in the developing world.

Gender inequality is a crucial development issue and poses a major obstacle to achieving development goals. As a VSO volunteer you’ll reduce inequalities faced by both women and men by breaking down some of the socially and culturally defined distributions of power, resources and labour. You’ll make a tangible contribution to promoting equality in the developing world.

As a diversity specialist you’ll have a social science degree and transferable skills that will enable you work as a gender adviser with VSO. You’ll have a minimum of 3 year's recent experience in diversity policy development (possibly in disability and ethnicity), integrating policies into day-to-day work and conducting culture and equality audits. You’ll also have experience of training others. Ideally you’ll have some understanding of gender issues in developing countries.

Health Educators

Volunteer Health Educators help improve community health and awareness in disadvantaged communities. You could be working in countries such as Indonesia or Namibia.

You could be a qualified health professional from any discipline with experience in health promotion. Or you might have a degree/diploma in Health Education or a Msc in Health Promotion, Primary Health Care, Mother and Child Health or a community nursing qualification. In either case, 2 years’ experience in a health promotion role is required.

Most volunteers work with community-based organisations or government departments. You could be involved in developing a community-based health project, or have a national or regional project planning and coordination role. Health educators are frequently involved in mother and child health, training of village health workers, drug awareness, water sanitation or community programmes. Many jobs require health educators with experience of working with HIV and AIDS.

Speech Therapists

We urgently need qualified speech and language specialists to help develop rehabilitation programmes and improve the technical ability of local professionals in Africa and Asia. Most placements have a strong emphasis on mentoring, coaching and providing on-the-job training. You may be working for the Ministry of Health or a regional hospital to support rehabilitation programmes or for the speech and language department at a university.

You’ll be a qualified speech therapist or pathologist with at least 2 years’ experience working with children or adults with communication disorders. Experience of working with children with autism is desirable.

You could be working in countries such as Namibia, Kenya, Uganda, Guyana or Vietnam.

Occupational Therapists

Due to a distinct lack of programmes catering for the needs of mental healthcare for children, adults and those living with disabilities, our partners require occupational therapists to help develop and strengthen rehabilitation programmes. Most placements will have a strong emphasis on training local professionals and improving their technical capacity.You could be working in countries such as Sri Lanka, Malawi or Guyana.

You’ll be a qualified occupational therapist with at least 2 years' experience of working with children or adults with mental health issues or disabilities. You’ll need excellent management and organisational skills and training experience is desirable.

Psychologists / Therapists

We are looking for qualified psychologists with at least 5 years' post-qualification experience in treatment of the mind or in counselling people in need. Training experience is essential for the available placements.

HIV/AIDS Professionals

The HIV & AIDS pandemic affects the lives of millions of people, devastating families and economies, and reversing hard-won development gains. We're urgently looking for volunteers from a health or social development background as well as advocacy, fundraising and management professionals. You could be working in prevention, treatment or care, or help local non governmental organisations to combat stigma, raise funds and awareness within affected communities.

We need programme and project managers to design and implement projects to ensure access to homecare and delivery of HIV services, such as testing, counselling and to provide training to national healthcare workers. You’ll monitor and evaluate these projects to ensure they increase quality and scope of services provided to the community.You could be working in countries such as Bangladesh, Namibia, Kenya, Cameroon or Nigeria.

You’ll have a degree and 3 to 5 years’ management and/or project management experience, combined with experience of developing programmes to promote and exercise the rights of people living with HIV and AIDS.
